Pizza Lab #29: Cheesecake Pizza
Okay folks, let’s talk cheesecake. It’s a cake, sorta… but it’s filled with cheese. Cream cheese, to be specific. And it’s quite a delectable-ass dessert. When you think of just the name alone, it does sound kind of silly though. Most people default the idea of cheese to old favorites like cheddar, swiss, limburger, etc… Few people hear the word cheese and go “Oh yeah! Mascarpone!” On the flipside, one thing we do think of when cheese comes up, is obviously pizza.
Whoa, shit, do you know what this means?!

It’s exactly what it looks like.
Pizza Lab #27: Irish Flag Pizza
Let’s talk St. Patrick’s Day. We wanted to do some sort of Irish-themed pizza for Pizza Lab this month. And yes, I guess I have to ask ‘what foods do you think of when it’s St. Patrick’s Day?’ Yeah, yeah, everyone’s gonna say corned beef and cabbage to which I reply, if I can conjure my best 90s teen-girl, a whole-hearted “What-everrrrr.” Aside from not actually being a traditional Irish dish, corned beef just plain sucks. Sure I’m a little biased on account of my not eating red meats, but how good can a meal be if 99% of the people in the country it’s most popular in only eat it for about two weeks out of the year? Yeah, screw that. Not to mention native Ireland essentially makes fun of Americans for their obsessive and erroneous association with it to Irish cuisine.
Instead Meg and I decided to put together something a bit more whimsical, trying our best to create a pizza inspired by the colors of the Irish flag. This presented an interesting concept since generally foods don’t get grouped together by color, as colors don’t generally represent flavor. It also was a unique challenge since it required some careful brainstorming on what foods work well together, while keeping in the color theme.
Pizza Lab #26: Peanut Butter Cup Pizza
Chocolate and peanut butter, peanut butter and chocolate – it’s one of the world’s best flavor combinations to ever come into creation. The first person to combine the two should have won a Nobel Prize for their work towards bettering the Earth. Now, considering that Erik and I both love the peanut butter/chocolate combo and pizza, it’s kind of surprising it took us almost two years of doing Pizza Labs to make a peanut butter cup pizza. Luckily the wait is now over because for February that’s exactly what we decided to do.
We agreed early on in the month that we should do a dessert pizza in honor of Valentine’s Day. Considering it was one of our newest ideas, we pretty quickly settled on the peanut butter cup pizza. Also it has a lot of chocolate and chocolate and Valentine’s Day goes together. A combination (pizza and peanut butter cups) with a flavor combination (chocolate and peanut butter) that we love in honor of Valentine’s Day. What could be more perfect?
Pizza Lab #25: Chicken Noodle Soup Pizza
It’s a new year, and time for another 12 months of pizza lab ideas. While our last Pizza Lab for 2014 ended pretty disastrously (so disastrously in fact that we couldn’t even work up the motivation to post about it. But we’ll revisit it someday, don’t worry), the first Pizza Lab for 2015 kicked things off to a good start.
The idea for this pizza came about from my thinking about what kind of pizza we should experiment with next while out on my third cold walk of the day at work. We agreed we should try to do something wintery for this one. And what’s more comforting on a cold winter day than a nice warm bowl of chicken noodle soup? Now obviously we couldn’t just pour chicken noodle soup onto a pizza crust. That would be very messy, and soggy; we just wanted to capture the flavors of it.
Pizza Lab #24: Pumpkin Pulled Chicken Pizza
Hot on the heals of like eight billion pumpkin posts, we here at Poor Couple’s Food Guide are pleased to present to you… another freakin’ pumpkin post! Yeahhh!
I joke though, we actually love pumpkins. As Meg mentioned in Food 101: Roasting Pumpkins, they’re really awesome because they’re a festive Halloween/Fall decoration, but can also be used as food as the season starts winding down to a close. We’ve made pumpkin pizza before, though that one was a dessert. This year we instead wanted to try and harness the savory possibilities that pumpkin possesses. That’s what led to Pizza Lab #24, Pumpkin Pulled Chicken.
