Pizza Lab #24: Pumpkin Pulled Chicken Pizza

Hot on the heals of like eight billion pumpkin posts, we here at Poor Couple’s Food Guide are pleased to present to you… another freakin’ pumpkin post! Yeahhh!

I joke though, we actually love pumpkins. As Meg mentioned in Food 101: Roasting Pumpkins, they’re really awesome because they’re a festive Halloween/Fall decoration, but can also be used as food as the season starts winding down to a close. We’ve made pumpkin pizza before, though that one was a dessert. This year we instead wanted to try and harness the savory possibilities that pumpkin possesses. That’s what led to Pizza Lab #24, Pumpkin Pulled Chicken.

Food 101: How To Make Basic Chicken/Turkey Gravy From The Pan

Thanksgiving is around the corner, so that means one thing is on most chef’s minds: turkey. Turkey is quintessential to a Thanksgiving meal, and yet where would it be without the sweet nectar that we know as gravy? That sauce made from pan drippings and spices can take any meat from good to awesome instantly, and it requires minimal effort to make in most cases. There’s a couple of slightly different ways to make it, but they all utilize the same basic ingredients and general preparation once you acquire the aforementioned drippings. Making gravy from scratch is easy and tastes a lot better than jar gravy, so it’s definitely a skill you should keep in your cooking holster.

Quick Recipe: Sweet Asian Mango Burrito

We’ve covered burritos before. They’re a delicious treat that can range from mild and snack-like, to massive and filling in as a full meal. Best part is that burritos are really easy to make, and can be thrown together with whatever’s lying around, or done up all fancy-like, depending on your mood. If you’re looking for something more in-depth, try this delicious recipe which is a bit more prep work than your standard burrito, but provides a really awesome, unique flavor thanks to the inclusion of mango and the sweet Asian barbecue style sauce you prepare for it. Incidentally, we created this recipe for our last anniversary, when the two of us decided to design a special burrito for the other. This particular one was Meg’s, though some day in the future we’ll get around to posting mine which was made spicy and dark. Because I’m just that edgy.

The Snack Report: Mckenzie’s Pumpkin Jack Hard Cider

Halloween is less than a week away. We’re excited, you know it. If you’ve been with us from the beginning of the month, you’ll know I took to reviewing some seasonal hard ciders, the only perfect drink of the Fall (sorry pumpkin ale). While reviewing ciders this month, I decided to save the best for last. A cider so delectable, it’s strong and formidable, yet tastes reminiscent of liquid dessert. The last of our seasonal Fall cider reviews is McKenzie’s Pumpkin Jack Hard Cider.

Recipe Time! Apple Fries

Sometimes we know exactly how we came up with the idea for some of our recipes. This was not one of those times.  We can’t remember what inspired us to try making apple fries, just that one day they appeared on our list of food experiments.  Though it isn’t a stretch to assume that it originated out of Erik’s love of apples.  And boy am I glad we did come up with this idea.  These may be one of my new favorite fall desserts.  Crisp on the outside, soft on the inside…sweet, tart…they’re so many awesome combinations in one.

Burger King has apple fries, but we all know they’re not really fries. They’re just apple sticks.  They just call them apple fries to trick small children into eating fruit.  These, my friends…these are apple fries.

These apples know their destiny, and they are proud to accept that fate.
