The Snack Report: Mochi Ice Cream

Thanks to our status as foodies and my growing up as a total weeaboo dork, Meg and I have developed quite a fondness for Japanese food. Lately we’ve been hitting up Asian markets like crazy in search of exotic snacks. Most of these have been good, but nothing particularly impressive; that is, until we came upon an awesome Summer treat in the form of these mofos:

Smoothie Sunday: Cherry Lemonade Smoothie

I really like cherries, so I wanted to try to use them in a smoothie.  I also decided to make it even more summer-y by making it cherry lemonade flavor.  The main problem with this smoothie was that I was using fresh cherries and don’t have a cherry pitter.  Needless to say, removing all the pits was a major pain in the butt.  However if you can find cherries whose pits have already been removed, or have cherry pitter, this smoothie will go a lot easier.

What you'll need...plus lemon juice because somehow I forgot to take it out for the picture.

Happy Birthday Poor Couple’s Food Guide!

From the beginning, cooking and food has been a big part of me and Erik’s relationship.  A year ago this week we decided to start a blog about it.  What started as wacky experiments in pizza in the form of Pizza Lab has now expanded to 6 categories with lots of recipes and reviews.  We had a slow start, but our audience has been growing, and will hopefully continue to grow.  We really want to thank those of you who have been with us from the beginning and for the support from our friends and family.  And of course we’re also always grateful for new readers and new fans.  You all mean a lot of us.  Every comment or like helps us feel like we’re making a difference.  So thank you everyone!

There’s some other big things coming soon for Poor Couple’s Food Guide, so keep an eye on the Facebook page!

Pizza Lab #21: S’mores Pizza

August is one of my favorite months. And yet it’s a shame this August has been one of the coldest ones in recent history, here on Long Island. We might be approaching Fall at an annoying pace, but that doesn’t mean we can’t squeeze out a few more weeks of Summery activities, so long as the weather doesn’t go completely to hell and we somehow end up with snow in September. We decided to squeeze in one last grilled pizza for the season, and ohhh man was it a good one. Pizza Lab takes on the firepit favorite, s’mores, marking our very first grilled dessert pizza.

Quick Recipe: Creamed Spinach Grilled Cheese

I know this sounds like kind of a strange sandwich, and it probably is, but stick with me on this one.  Despite being a national chain, Boston Market has my favorite creamed spinach around.  I’m not sure how they do it, but it’s just really good.  It’s not too cream-y, not too spinach-y and it just tastes good.  We somehow had some leftover at my house the other day, and I really wanted to eat some of it for lunch, but I didn’t want to just sit there eating creamed spinach because that wouldn’t be a very satisfying lunch.  So I decided to make a sandwich out of it.  And it was really good!  You can use whatever creamed spinach you like, it doesn’t have to be Boston Market, but I can’t guarantee it will work as well (additionally, if you want to use fresh spinach leaves instead that’d probably work too.  I’d recommend using baby spinach leaves though).
