Pizza Lab #21: S’mores Pizza

August is one of my favorite months. And yet it’s a shame this August has been one of the coldest ones in recent history, here on Long Island. We might be approaching Fall at an annoying pace, but that doesn’t mean we can’t squeeze out a few more weeks of Summery activities, so long as the weather doesn’t go completely to hell and we somehow end up with snow in September. We decided to squeeze in one last grilled pizza for the season, and ohhh man was it a good one. Pizza Lab takes on the firepit favorite, s’mores, marking our very first grilled dessert pizza.

Pizza Lab #20: Raspberry Tart Pizza

One of my favorite pastimes of the Summer is eating fruit straight off the bushes at my parents’ house. I could make a quick breakfast or even lunch just out of foraging around the yard. And no, they don’t live in some remote backwoods town deep within the Ozarks, they live right here in Patchogue on Long Island. The suburbs. 10 minutes away from a frigging Wal-mart. But! There’s everything ranging from blueberries to raspberries to apples to pears growing there; their property is a lesson on the virtues of planting edible landscaping when you finally own a home. Of course that’s an article for a different time, but for now we’ll dive into this edition of Pizza Lab, which was fashioned from the fresh, organic, homegrown raspberries I bring up.

Pizza Lab #19: Buffalo Cauliflower Pizza

Not sure if everyone’s aware but I stopped eating red meat several years ago for health reasons. Ever since, aside from rare occasions the only meat that I eat is chicken. I’ve seen the effects of this diet switch proven successful through bloodwork and never plan on switching back. Red meat’s nasty anyway. So because of this, you can imagine I’m somewhat sympathetic of vegetarians. Though personally I could never stop eating at least chicken due to its importance to my own personal cooking style, I can definitely commend people who choose that diet and I have utmost respect for them.

That being said, I do lament the fact we haven’t given much vegetarian-friendly support on the site outside of desserts or cereal. That’s my bad. But! This post will hopefully make up for that a little bit since we envisioned this Pizza Lab exclusively vegetarian in nature. It comes from a friend of mine who recently posted about a food place selling Buffalo cauliflower bites. Meanwhile, Buffalo chicken is a pizza that unfortunately lots of non-meat-eaters miss out on. So that’s where Pizza Lab comes in!

Also, fried cauliflower is bangin’, so any excuse to make it is good enough for me.

Pizza Lab #18: Tikka Pizza

Believe it or not, Meg A. and I plan our Pizza Lab choices pretty well ahead of the time, for the most part. Sometimes we throw it together last minute, but most of them come from a laundry list of ideas and experiments. This month’s Pizza Lab actually has been on the drawing board for quite sometime, originally being formulated almost a year ago! The two of us love Indian food and a trip to the local curry house wouldn’t be complete without some Chicken Tikka. Yes, I realize it’s heavily Americanized (or technically Englandized since they’ve erroneously claimed it to be “a true British national dish” years ago, despite originating in Punjab) however its flavor and background undeniably lies in Indian cuisine. As such we tossed around the idea for a pizza featuring curry spices and soon the idea for a Tikka Pizza was born.

Also, it’s just really fun to say ‘tikka pizza’.

Pizza Lab #17: Oreo Pizza

Oreos are truly a force to be reckoned with. They’re almost a staple snack food in American culture and have become synonymous with cookies as a result. Everybody likes them, to the point that there’s ongoing discussion about the correct way to eat the damn things. Nabisco themselves have even spunoff the cookies into different varieties like Marshmallow Crispy Oreos and Chocolate Chip Cookie Oreos. They as a snack or dessert have reached a transcendental food status in that they get treated as their own ingredient or flavor for other desserts. That’s pretty freakin’ impressive when you think about it. We see foods now that are straight-up called Oreo-variety, not just chocolate-cookie-variety. So good for Nabisco! Oreos are yummy, and deserve all their mystique. Now obviously, we’ve approached the subject of Oreo desserts before, but this will be a special occasion where Oreos and dessert pizza are combined together!
