Pizza Lab #37: Peppermint Christmas Pizza
Happy New Year to all our faithful readers, as well as any new faces who just stumbled onto Poor Couple’s Food Guide. 2015 is almost completely gone, but luckily for you, we’ve got one last Pizza Lab to squeeze in before 2016 starts up. T’is the season to be festive, and as such we designed a true Christmastime pizza. Let’s ring in the New Year right, by eating dessert pizza!
Pizza Lab #36: Thanksgiving Leftovers Pizza (Redux)
Thanksgiving has come and gone once again. And in kitchens all over America, people are trying their damnedest to salvage their leftovers, reconstituting it back into a nice emulation of the delightful feast that took place four days ago. Or perhaps you couldn’t wait that long? Perhaps you figured that Friday is a lazy enough night to eat leftovers for dinner. That’s a possibility as well.
But no, there is a better destiny for your Thanksgiving leftovers… there is a greater cause they can be called to… one special dish that comes round but once a year, just like the aforementioned feast that inspired it. Longtime fans of PCFG may know what I speak of. Of course, that is Thanksgiving Pizza.
Pizza Lab #35: Twix Pizza or Chocolate Caramel Cookie Pizza
A few weeks ago I was at work on the docks of Fire Island, and I saw some kids eating Starburst. Though “eating” is a really generous way of describing it, since they were all shoving like 3 or 4 pieces at a time into their shitty middle school mouths. It really made me think to myself for the first time ever, like, “Man, candy is frigging disgusting.” Just another thing reminding me that I’m getting older, I guess. But nonetheless, I will fully admit that with Halloween fast-approaching I will still probably partake in some consumption of the aforementioned sugar trash, guiltily.
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate all chocolate and confections, per se, but rather the cheap and sad excuses for chocolate designed for impulse buying at every store on planet Earth. Real chocolate, decent quality chocolate is delicious, and the same goes for caramel and other sugary treats. As with everything, if you concoct your own creations at home with fresh ingredients, it’ll taste better and be better for you. That brings me to my next point… Twix Pizza.
Pizza Lab #34: Teriyaki Burger Pizza
Earlier this year, Erik was lamenting not eating hamburgers anymore because he missed making teriyaki burgers. So I suggested – why not just make turkey teriyaki burgers instead? And thus Erik got his burgers back. And we enjoyed some really yummy turkey burgers this summer. I had never had a teriyaki burger before, but Erik was raving about them so much, obviously now I wanted to have one too. And guys, they’re really good. They’re like your favorite stir-fry in burger form. So when the discussion for this month’s Pizza Lab rolled around something capturing our summer of turkey burgers seemed appropriate. We fully intended to make this pizza as a bit of a last hurrah to summer, much as the month of September itself is. Unfortunately time got the better of us and we ended up making this pizza on the first day of autumn. But it’s the thought that counts right?
Pizza Lab #33: Marshmallow Krispie Treat Pizza
There’s not a lot of universal truths out there. It’s hard to make grand, sweeping statements that are actually true. And most professional writers and college professors will tell you the worst way to begin a piece is by doing basically what I’m doing here, but hey that’s besides the point. Anyway, here goes.
I venture to say, every single person under the age of 50 has eaten a Rice Krispie Treat, in America. Really. Come on, how can you not have? They’re a snack/dessert fixture for everyone. For many kids, that’s their first venture into the world of cooking, due to the overwhelming simplicity of them. Three ingredients, no knives or sharp objects, very little heating, and no complicated cooking involved. Everyone has to have had at least one in their life at some point.
Naturally, it’s about time we turned them into a pizza, don’t you think?
