Cheat Codes: Tips For Reheating Rice
Rice is a big staple in many cultures’ diets. Pretty much everyone outside of Europe has been dumping rice on the sides of their plates since basically forever. And in modern day, everyone eats rice. That’s right, everyone. Even gluten-free people. With good reason too! Rice is a really effective side-dish, is easy to prepare, and unless you’ve got blood-sugar disorders it’s pretty innocuous in your diet. Interesting fact I learned a couple years ago, all you Italians out there, know how your mother/grandmother would whip up a pot of sauce on Sunday, then you’d just use that sauce all week for different dishes? Many Asian families have done the same thing in a similar manner using a pot of rice. Call me a traitor, but I forgo the pot of sauce, and instead use the weekly rice batch for my own meals ranging from burritos to curries. Rice is great and versatile, but actually come to think of it, there’s a lot of people who aren’t really sure how to heat it up correctly.
Cheat Codes: Save Your Used Fry Oil
I think I’ve mentioned before on here that fried foods get a bad rep. Sure, if you roll on down to Burger King and wolf down two boxes of fries, then yeah that’s a bad idea. But homemade food that’s fried in healthy oils and served fresh can be pretty innocuous when it comes to their nutritional content. When cooked properly, homemade chicken fingers or french fries can contain very little oil left on them, and the little bit that’s there will mostly contain healthy, unsaturated fats with virtually no cholesterol.
But obviously the downside here is that buying healthy oils like canola can be a bit more on the expensive side. Fortunately, there’s a really easy way to cut down on its costs: saving your used oil after you finish frying.
Cheat Codes: Instant Shredded Chicken
A couple weeks ago we covered making pulled/shredded chicken from scratch. It’s fairly easy, and it makes for awesome yummy recipes. But what if there were a way to make it even easier? What if, say, you wanted to just… buy chicken and shred it in like two minutes flat?
Cheat Codes: Homemade Hot Chocolate & Hot Cocoa
As everyone in northeastern America is aware now, it’s preeetty freaking Winter outside. There’s several feet of snow on the ground in a lot of places around here and it’s gonna be a while before those disgusting grey-colored snow mountains in parking lots disappear. And yet we still have another month left of this shit, unfortunately. But hey, don’t let that get you down. Make some hot chocolate! It’s good for you!*
Cheat Codes: Overnight Oatmeal
Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a morning person. At all. I enjoy my sleep, and I enjoy it well into the late hours of the morning. And those times I do have to get up early it takes me a long time to get going. So knowing my breakfast is ready and waiting for me when I get up is a load off. While there are some other types of breakfast that you can prepare in advance, today I’ll be tackling everyone’s favorite winter breakfast: oatmeal.
