The Snack Report: Turbana Plantain Chips
Plantains are an interesting food. They look like big, angular bananas, and that’s because they pretty much are. The two are very closely related. The main difference is that plantains are large and starchy, and therefore best eaten after being cooked, while bananas are smaller and sugary, and often eaten raw. Flavor-wise plantains are actually more similar to potatoes than bananas. In fact fried plantains (tostones) are pretty much just the best French fry you’ll ever have. The first time you eat plantains it can be hard to get over the idea that it’s’ going to taste like a banana. But once you do you’ll want to eat all the plantains.
The Cereal Report: Froot Loops Treasures
The Cereal Report is a column in which PCFG conducts various cereal reviews, of new or limited products, as well as providing brief backgrounds on the cereal. Cereal is delicious and fairly cheap as far as meals go. Everyone should eat cereal!
Froot Loops is a tragic cereal. Don’t get me wrong, I really like them, but they fall into that group of kid cereals that get a bad rep due to their fairly high sugar content. Some cereals are pretty stupendously caloriffic, but Froot Loops isn’t particularly bad, featuring only 150 calories per serving with milk. It’s not really that bad for you, especially considering the sugars themselves are just plain sugar, not high fructose corn syrup, so a lot of the stigma comes from the fact they are pretty damn sweet-tasting. And I suppose sweetness isn’t for everybody, so let the people who dislike flavor stick to their plain Cheerios, but do not hold it against those of us who do enjoy partaking in sugary cereals for breakfast. (Because guess what, when you add sugar and fruits to your plain cereal, you’re not really making them that less sugary than Froot Loops.)
But I must digress, Froot Loops caught my eye the other day in the store when I saw a new iteration of them, Froot Loops Treasures.
Quick Recipe: Guacamole Grilled Cheese
In my mind grilled cheese sandwiches are one of the best lunch foods around. They’re quick, easy, and have that nostalgia factor since they’re also a childhood favorite. Except that the grilled cheese you can make as an adult is way better than the kind you used to get as a kid. In addition, they can easily be altered to fit the food mood you’re in just by changing up the cheese and other flavorings you use. Today I’m going to share one of my go-to grilled cheese sandwiches.
Recipe Time! Springtime Baked Chicken and Rice
As you may have noticed, we’re big fans of chicken and rice here at Poor Couple’s Food Guide. For the less enlightened, you may think that it gets boring eating a lot of chicken and rice. But this is not the case! There are so many delicious ways to prepare it, each one tasting different from the last. Today I’m here to share one such recipe that I came up with. After months of heavy winter foods I wanted to come up with something light and springy, now that the weather is finally warming up. And something with green in it to reflect the green finally growing outside.
