The Snack Report: Kit-Kat Vanilla Ice Cream Flavor

One of the more interesting but benign trends Japan has gotten into over the past decade or so has been the rise of fancy flavored Kit-Kat bars. Obviously, in America we simply know them as plain wafer cookies coated in boring milk chocolate and pretty much nobody likes them, since after you’ve eaten one there’s not a whole lot compelling you to ever eat them again. However as weeaboos, otaku, and even people just casually aware of Japanese culture have found out, Nestle actually expanded the Kit-Kat brand into bold, delicious new territories in Japan. There’s more than just the one or two types you see in the west here; Kit-Kats come in dozens of different varieties in Japan, ranging from delicious to interesting to downright insane. Stawberry? Got it. Sweet potato? It’s sweet. Spicy wasabi? You bet your ass they got wasabi. Virtually everything is a Kit-Kat flavor in Japan. Long have I wanted to get my hands on some of these magical flavors, and ironically we ended up finding them not in the multiple Asian grocers we frequent around here, but instead in a gawdy candy store we visited on our trip to Baltimore.

The Snack Report: Pumpkin Spice Oreos

Here we are again, another Oreos review. And yet, despite 4 previous Oreo reviews, I still had to pay for these with my own money.  When are you going to throw us a bone Nabisco (or more specifically, some free cookies)?  But enough of my grumbling.

It’s kind of funny because about a month ago we saw the regular Halloween Oreos that are just the regular flavor but with orange colored cream.  I commented on how it’s lame that for Halloween they just have orange colored cream and not pumpkin flavored cream, and we agreed that would be a tasty idea.  Well, about a week later in a different grocery store I stumbled upon the pumpkin spice Oreos.  I was very excited.  But did they live up to expectations?

Cheat Code: Roasting Jack O’lantern Pumpkin Seeds

It’s that time of year again. It’s almost Halloween, which means it’s time for witches, ghosts, goblins, and jack o’lanterns!  Pumpkins and jack o’lanterns are some of the best Halloween decorations because they look nice and fun, but are also food!  That’s right, all that gloop you pull out of your pumpkin to carve it has a bonus snack hidden within.  Pumpkin seeds!  Pumpkin seeds are a good snack because they’re a good source of protein, fiber, vitamin E and vitamin B.  They also contain the good fats that can help lower cholesterol.  So you could definitely think twice before just throwing all those seeds out.  But before eating them you need to roast them.

The Snack Report: Maple Cotton Candy

Cotton candy is a magical treat. It’s sugar that’s been transformed into something light and fluffy and fun.  Cotton candy has been around since the 18th century, but it was expensive then, so not many people knew about it.  Like many popular food stuffs today, cotton candy got its first real introduction to a wide audience at a World’s Fair, in this case the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.

Cheat Codes: Ice Pops without Popsicle Molds

Ice pops are a beloved summer-time treat.  They’re cold and refreshing on hot summer days.  It’s always nice to keep some ice pops in the freezer during the summer.  The problem I’ve continually had with store bought variety fruit flavor ice pop packs is that there’s almost always at least one flavor I don’t like (usually grape).  This usually results in either leaving them in the freezer until they’re really old and gross so I ultimately throw them out, or pushing them off on to someone else.  Whichever the case it seem like you should be able to have the ice pop flavors you want.  And you can!  Ice pops are super easy to make at home.  Allow me to show you how.
