The Snack Report: Cinnamon Bun Oreos

Well, Oreo is at it again. It seems like every week there’s a new limited edition Oreo flavor out in stores. Due to how often they’ve been releasing new flavors we’ve fallen behind in reviewing them all. Oreos are kind of pricey and we can’t afford to buy new ones constantly. But we were both intrigued by the idea of cinnamon bun Oreos so we gave these ones a try. The idea of recreating a cinnamon bun in cookie form isn’t an inherently bad one. Cinnamon buns are amazing and wonderful, but they’re a pain in the ass to make yourself at home (from scratch anyway) and getting them fresh usually involves a trip to the mall. So a cinnamon bun treat that’s easily accessible should be a big hit. The difficulty comes in capturing what makes cinnamon buns so delicious in a non-bun form. How did Oreo do at accomplishing this? Let’s assess.

Pizza Lab #38: Chicken & Waffles Pizza

So I was born and raised here in New York. New York’s got some decent foods it calls claim to fame. Bagels, pizza, buffalo wings, etc… It’s great. But despite that, I have to admit part of me rues the fact I missed out on certain treats more exclusive to southern cooking while growing up. In particular, a few years back I became acquainted with the so-random-it’s-brilliant homestyle concoction known as chicken & waffles. Fast-forward to present day, and we’ve finally gotten around to crafting a Pizza Lab after this scrumptious classic of American recipes.DSCF8132

Quick Recipe: Avocado Breakfast Toast

Most mornings I’m satisfied having a bagel, cereal, or oatmeal for breakfast. But some mornings I just wake up wanting more. When that happens I usually turn to eggs. They’re yummy, full of protein, and fast to make. But eating just scrambled or over easy eggs with buttered toast can get boring. That means it’s time to mix things up! On the particular morning that I came up with this I happened to have half of an avocado lying around that I wanted to use before it went bad, so I proceeded from there.

The Snack Report: Unique Pretzels Splits

Pretzels are such an overlooked little snack food. Snacks get a bad rep thanks to classic junk foods like Doritos and Cheetos and Fritos, which all magically rhyme, something I never quite noticed before… Weird. But alas, the poor pretzel does not deserve to be lumped into the same category, as they are actually relatively benign in the grand scheme of snackature. Pretzels are merely tiny, little breads. Cool-shaped, miniature breadsticks with some salt. There’s nothing particularly malicious in them. Sure, they’re not a nutrient-laden power food, but let’s be honest here; if you’re worried about cramming vitamins and nutrition into your snacking then you either have a shitty diet, or your diet is so good that you get enough nutrients from your other food of the day. They’re not bad for you by any stretch of the imagination. Rather, pretzels are merely a fun, little snack, and that’s it. Unfortunately because of this, many brands of storebought pretzels seem to really just be cop-outs. You see a lot of bland, generic ones that sorta just have a boring, salty starch flavor. They’re good in a pinch, or to serve en masse with dip, but if you’re a true fan of pretzels like myself, you’re gonna wanna find a REAL pretzel brand that knows what they’re doing.

Cheat Codes: Helping Bread Last Longer

When you live with a bunch of other people, food tends to disappear rather quickly, and you don’t usually have to worry about it going bad before it gets eaten. But when you’re living on your own or with one other person, the food doesn’t fly out of the cupboard as fast anymore. Things that used to be gone in days can now take weeks to finish. And that can be a problem for perishable food items.  You don’t want to end up throwing away food you spent good money on. Luckily there are ways to help a lot of foods last longer. Today we’ll focus on bread.
