Big Plans Happening For Poor Couple’s Food Guide

Some of you may have noticed that Meg and myself have been posting a bit less than usual lately. Recipe of the week has kinda become more of a bi-weekly occurrence, and our Food 101 posts have also slowed down. Yet at the same time views have been going up, and that makes us feel a bit guilty. Well, we’d like to take this post as an opportunity to explain some of what’s been going on lately.

People close to us are probably aware that Meg A. is currently in the home stretch of her graduate program at Parson’s New School For Design, and thus preparing for her Master’s final examination. Anyone of you whom is in or has gone to grad school can attest to the absurd amounts of studying involved in this, so you can see why this would limit one’s ability to partake in blogging.
At the same time, I’ve been hard at work with a few things myself. On top of some professional certification classes to take care of, I’ve also been hard at work finishing production on an album for my electronic music side project Gentleman.BOSS the past month or so. So suffice to say, the two of us have been busy.

But! This post isn’t all bad news. Fortunately, come mid April, we’ll both be freed up once again and ready to bring back our regular posting schedule of three posts per week. Besides that, we’ve got some big updates taking place as well! As you may have noticed, as of today, PCFG now has its own Twitter, so those of you not on Facebook can still follow our updates, and keep up to date on various mundane details we deem Tweet-worthy! Additionally, you can all look forward to us creating our very own Youtube channel this Spring as well.

So as you can see, things may be slow now, but give it a few weeks and there’ll be even more ways to keep up with Poor Couple’s Food Guide and learn awesome ways to keep cooking while on a budget! Recipe Time: Apple Cinnamon Oat Pancakes

Oatmeal and pancakes are two great breakfast staples. But… have you ever wondered… what would happen if you combined the two? Okay, so probably not, it’s not that exciting sounding, however it does create a really yummy pancake. We’ve experimented with oats in pancakes before and it pretty much just gives that nice, robust, oat-y flavor to the pancakes. And actually they tend to flip better when cooking since the oats bond the batter together pretty well! So not only are they tasty, but also make your life easier, if at least for the few minutes while cooking these guys.

Cheat Codes: Instant Shredded Chicken

A couple weeks ago we covered making pulled/shredded chicken from scratch. It’s fairly easy, and it makes for awesome yummy recipes. But what if there were a way to make it even easier? What if, say, you wanted to just… buy chicken and shred it in like two minutes flat?

Cheat Codes: Homemade Hot Chocolate & Hot Cocoa

As everyone in northeastern America is aware now, it’s preeetty freaking Winter outside. There’s several feet of snow on the ground in a lot of places around here and it’s gonna be a while before those disgusting grey-colored snow mountains in parking lots disappear. And yet we still have another month left of this shit, unfortunately. But hey, don’t let that get you down. Make some hot chocolate! It’s good for you!*

Food 101: How To Shred Chicken (Or Pulled Pork, Or Other Meats)

I find that a lot of people have been really into slow-cooking lately. Some people like it because it’s easy enough to leave meat in a pot for 6 hours and not care the entire day, but then some people are also under the impression that meat needs to be slow-cooked before it can be turned into the holy grail of barbecue-style foods, pulled chicken/pork. On one hand, when you slow-cook a meat, it tends to make it crazy tender, and thus easy to shred by hand. However on the other hand, it’s entirely within the realm of possibility to pull chicken cutlets or pork chops. It’s just not as effortless.

But come on, pulled chicken, man. Everybody loves it. Because really who the hell wants to have to chew their food all the way?
