Tea Time: Garlic Tea
Despite the way it looks outside spring is around the corner, which means we’re in the last stretch of cold and flu season. Hopefully you’ll be lucky and make it out germ free. But if you happen to find yourself with a late season cold, garlic tea is a great way to help reduce the symptoms of your illness and perhaps even help you get over it faster. Before you go running away at the thought of drinking garlic, let me assure you that the garlic flavor is mild, and that it actually tastes similar to lemon tea.
Food 101: How to Make Soup Yourself
I don’t know about you, but it’s been ridiculously and unnecessarily cold where I live this winter. When it’s so cold out, all I can think about is ways to keep warm. One nice, tasty way to keep warm is by eating soup. I fully admit to eating soup from a can on numerous occasions. But I also really enjoy making my own soup. Soup is one of those dishes that can seem kind of intimidating, but is actually pretty simple (At least to start. Once you feel more confident in your cooking abilities you can advance to fancy soups too). I’m going to show you the basic formula for soup making using the black bean soup I made for dinner the other night as an example.
Food 101: Refrigerator Staples
Last week I gave you the rundown on pantry staples. This time I’m here to tell you about refrigerator staples. To be honest I’m not sure if that’s actually a term, or if I just made it up. But the concept still stands, so work with me here. Refrigerator staples are different from pantry staples in that in general you can’t buy them and expect them to still be good months later. They are by their nature more perishable and require more maintenance, so to speak. However there are a few things I think are important to keep on hand.
Food 101: Pantry Staples
I realized the other day that Erik and I throw around the term “pantry staples” a lot in our posts. However if you’re not one to cook all that much, or are just getting into cooking on your own, you might not be aware of what types of food we mean (and there’s nothing wrong with that!). So I’ve compiled a list of pantry staples to help give you an idea of what ingredients are good to have on hand all the time.
Getting the Most Out of Ingredients
When you don’t have handfuls of money to throw at things, it’s generally a good idea to use all of something that you’ve spent money buying. For some things this is easy to do. Any pantry staple you buy and then just keep in said pantry until it’s used up. For other ingredients though it isn’t so obvious, and a lot of times you end up throwing things out. I’m going to give you some hints on how to use up less obvious leftovers.
