Tea Time: Review Round-up
We’ve both been sidelined by a nasty cold this week (me the first half, Erik the second). That means we’ve both been drinking a lot of tea, when we were able to work up the energy. Tea is good all the time, but especially when you have a cold because the steam can help clear your nose, it can help soothe your throat, and it can help your insides feel nice and warm. Since I can’t taste any food well enough to write about it this week, I’ve decided to write up a review of some of my favorite teas that I’ve been drinking instead.
Food 101: Refrigerator Staples
Last week I gave you the rundown on pantry staples. This time I’m here to tell you about refrigerator staples. To be honest I’m not sure if that’s actually a term, or if I just made it up. But the concept still stands, so work with me here. Refrigerator staples are different from pantry staples in that in general you can’t buy them and expect them to still be good months later. They are by their nature more perishable and require more maintenance, so to speak. However there are a few things I think are important to keep on hand.
Food 101: Pantry Staples
I realized the other day that Erik and I throw around the term “pantry staples” a lot in our posts. However if you’re not one to cook all that much, or are just getting into cooking on your own, you might not be aware of what types of food we mean (and there’s nothing wrong with that!). So I’ve compiled a list of pantry staples to help give you an idea of what ingredients are good to have on hand all the time.
Cheat Codes: Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice
Everybody loves Fall. It’s got everything good about life all rolled into one season. Nice weather, cool scenery, fun holidays, and awesome food. That last part obviously being relevant to anyone possessing a sense of taste/smell. There’s a lot of fun flavors and culinary themes going on from September to November you don’t encounter for the rest of the year. Out of nowhere, it’s the 20th, and suddenly everything smells like cinnamon, and tastes like a pumpkin. I don’t know, I’m not a scientist, I don’t question it, it just happens.
Cheat Codes: Cinnamon Sugar
Some things are so easy to make yourself that I’m always shocked that people would pay money to have other people make it for them. One such item is cinnamon sugar. For as long as I can remember we’ve had a container of cinnamon sugar in my house that my mom would mix together herself.
I was absolutely confounded when I saw small bottles of pre-made cinnamon sugar for sale in the grocery store. Cinnamon and sugar are both cooking staples you should already keep on hand, so why buy more of something you already have, and pay more for someone else to mix it up for you?
