The Cereal Report: Chocolate Toast Crunch

The Cereal Report is a column in which PCFG conducts various cereal reviews, of new or limited products, as well as providing brief backgrounds on the cereal. Cereal is delicious and fairly cheap as far as meals go. Everyone should eat cereal!

It’s not everyday you see a new rendition of the Toast Crunch cereals. Lo and behold however, with the new year comes Chocolate Toast Crunch. People like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, people love chocolate, so Chocolate Toast Crunch should be a given right? Afterall the last one, Peanut Butter Toast Crunch was fantastic and the original Cinnamon sets a very high standard for its successors. Unfortunately Chocolate Toast Crunch is one of the weaker entries in this cherished line.

Chocolate and cinnamon are two top-tier flavors that happen to go well together in cookies, ice cream, and other desserts. That fact does not waver with CTC. The cereal itself tastes great on its own. The cereal pieces themselves are cocoa-flavored, almost bittersweet, however they still feature the trademark cinnamon dusting we’ve all come to know and love. Simple, right?

Not quite, unfortunately. The problem with Chocolate Toast Crunch is that the cinnamon flavor washes off abnormally quickly in milk, compared to other cereals, specifically Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Plain and on its own, the cereal pieces taste great, offering both chocolate and cinnamon in tandem with one another. CTC is a perfect snacking/munchie cereal to just eat out of the box, but as a breakfast cereal with milk and everything it leaves a lot to be desired.

After about one minute of sitting in milk, the pieces lose their cinnamon flavor and instead feature that bland, generic chocolate-cereal flavor which has been done to death, but even worse since the cereal pieces feature little sweetness since the sweet taste is found in the cinnamon sugar powder. See the problem? So unless you finish your bowl super quickly you’re left with a bunch of half-assed, brown squares with little flavor which, to be honest, almost tasted flat-out bad. The cereal milk was pretty good, as to be expected, since all the cinnamon sugar washes off into it. That’s still not enough to save this disappointment, unfortunately.
