The Snack Report: Ritz Fudge Covered Crackers

I feel like we’ve said this before in Snack Report, but it seems like everybody has jumped onto the “limited edition” bandwagon lately. Oreos have become the worst offender, but nearly every snack food has dipped its toe into the limited edition waters. One of the latest to join in is Ritz crackers. Their limited edition offering is Fudge Covered Ritz. We first saw these in the grocery store last week, and this week they just happened to be on sale, so I decided to give them a try. I was actually kind of excited about them because I really enjoy crackers. Cheese and crackers and peanut butter and crackers are classic snacks, but I’ll also just snack on crackers plain. So the prospect of a dessert cracker was intriguing.

The chocolate plus salt combo is nothing new. It has gained in popularity over the past few years though. Chocolate covered pretzels and peanuts have been around for a long time. And chocolate covered potato chips entered the scene a bit later. There’s even chocolate covered bacon. So chocolate covered crackers really isn’t that far out of an idea. But can they stand up to their predecessors?

Pizza Lab #35: Twix Pizza or Chocolate Caramel Cookie Pizza

A few weeks ago I was at work on the docks of Fire Island, and I saw some kids eating Starburst. Though “eating” is a really generous way of describing it, since they were all shoving like 3 or 4 pieces at a time into their shitty middle school mouths. It really made me think to myself for the first time ever, like, “Man, candy is frigging disgusting.” Just another thing reminding me that I’m getting older, I guess. But nonetheless, I will fully admit that with Halloween fast-approaching I will still probably partake in some consumption of the aforementioned sugar trash, guiltily.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate all chocolate and confections, per se, but rather the cheap and sad excuses for chocolate designed for impulse buying at every store on planet Earth. Real chocolate, decent quality chocolate is delicious, and the same goes for caramel and other sugary treats. As with everything, if you concoct your own creations at home with fresh ingredients, it’ll taste better and be better for you. That brings me to my next point… Twix Pizza.

Pizza Lab #33: Marshmallow Krispie Treat Pizza

There’s not a lot of universal truths out there. It’s hard to make grand, sweeping statements that are actually true. And most professional writers and college professors will tell you the worst way to begin a piece is by doing basically what I’m doing here, but hey that’s besides the point. Anyway, here goes.

I venture to say, every single person under the age of 50 has eaten a Rice Krispie Treat, in America. Really. Come on, how can you not have? They’re a snack/dessert fixture for everyone. For many kids, that’s their first venture into the world of cooking, due to the overwhelming simplicity of them. Three ingredients, no knives or sharp objects, very little heating, and no complicated cooking involved. Everyone has to have had at least one in their life at some point.

Naturally, it’s about time we turned them into a pizza, don’t you think?

The Snack Report: Oreo Thins

Oreo just keeps on crankin’ out new flavors and varieties. Earlier this year, we took a look at S’Mores Oreos, which were actually pretty awesome. On one hand, it’s getting kind of tiring seeing them shill out inane ideas like red velvet and key lime, but at the same time there is a tiny bit of excitement in seeing what crazy crossover they’ll do next. Their newest addition to the product family is a bit of an enigma, Oreo Thins. They’re essentially your regular old original Oreos, but half the thickness. That’s all there is to them, yet they’ve caused a little bit of a stir on social media and people I know for whatever reason. Apparently people are interested in them.

The Cereal Report (Classic): Reese’s Puffs

The Cereal Report is a column in which PCFG conducts various cereal reviews, of new or limited products, as well as providing brief backgrounds on the cereal. Cereal is delicious and fairly cheap as far as meals go. Everyone should eat cereal!

So Reese’s Puffs are nothing new, they’ve been around for about twenty years, but admittedly I don’t eat them all that often. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve actually eaten them, and last time I did was probably in high school. I recall not liking them very much. So I figured I’d give them another shot since they were on sale recently; maybe my adult tastes have become a bit more receptive of this blatant kid’s cereal, who knows.
