PCFG Deep Dish Podcast – Episode 1: Irish Soda Bread!

After months of teasing and procrastination, PCFG is finally unveiling its new project, the Poor Couple’s Food Guide Deep Dish Podcast! Tired of informative murder porn shows? Getting sick of all your podcasts being about serial killers? Listen to Meg and Erik give you a crash course on food history! Each episode focuses on a specific food or dish and takes a deep-dive look at its origins, history, and how it developed into the modern version we know it as today.

This show is in early stages of creation so for now we’re doing a preliminary trial run of 5 episodes. If you like them, let us know on social media and we’ll keep making them!

In the premiere episode of PCFG Deep Dish Podcast, Erik and Meg take a look at Irish Soda Bread. Discover the origins of this humble, easy, little bread loaf, and how it came to become a St. Patrick’s Day favorite!

Episode 5: Flan! Poor Couple's Food Guide

In this episode of Deep Dish, we take you all the way back to Ancient Rome where everybody's favorite jiggly custard dessert, flan, was first created! It's a miracle we still eat this stuff considering how many collapsed empires it survived! In the spirit of custard, we also go over some Jell-o mold horrors from the 1960s! And uh, yeah, they're pretty bad.
  1. Episode 5: Flan!
  2. Episode 4: Banana Bread!
  3. Episode 3: Penne Alla Vodka!
  4. Episode 2: Hamburgers!
  5. Episode 1: Irish Soda Bread

  • Despite its name, it’s not actually Irish!
  • British food is bad.
  • The Irish Potato Famine sucked.
  • No, really, the potato famine really sucked.
  • Soda bread makes a comeback because of internet idiots!

Next week’s episode features an American classic, possibly one of the most iconic dishes in the history of the United States, whose origins trace back all the way to Genghis Khan carrying it on horseback! Think you know what it might be? Submit your guesses on Facebook, Instagram, or in the comments below, and if you’re correct we’ll give you a shoutout on next week’s show! Until then, stay hungry, peeps!
