Cheat Codes: Homemade Tortilla Chips

Tortilla chips are a party snack classic.  They’re strong enough to hold up dips of pretty much any kind, but mild enough in flavor to let said dip shine.  And yet they also have enough of their own flavor to be yummy eaten on their own.  Tortilla chips bought at the store are usually pretty good (though some are better than others.  Perhaps we’ll have a snack report comparison about it one of these days), but tortilla chips at Mexican restaurants are usually even better.  That’s because most places make their chips fresh from scratch.  And is the case with almost all food stuffs, fresher is better.

Making tortilla chips from super scratch involves making tortillas from scratch.  While probably awesome, making fresh tortillas is a bit too much work for this particular application.  That’s why this is a cheat code; it’s halfway between totally from scratch and straight up store bought.

Luckily, despite soft tortillas from scratch involves multiple ingredients and special equipment, making tortilla chips only requires three ingredients and standard kitchen equipment.

The Snack Report: Chobani Green Tea Greek Yogurt

A couple of weeks ago I was at the grocery store buying yogurt to make tzatziki sauce for our Souvlaki Gyro Pizza.  While in the yogurt section something caught my eye – green tea infused yogurt.  Since green tea is one of my go-to teas to drink, I found this idea very interesting.  It’s not an entirely novel idea to mix green tea with a dairy product, since green tea ice cream is a thing, but considering that yogurt has its own unique tangy flavor, it seemed different enough to give a try.  Since it happened to be on sale, I bought it, and I finally got around to eating it for breakfast the other day.  So how did green tea yogurt taste?

Quick Recipe: Fluffy Battered Onion Rings

There are two types of onion rings in this world.  There’s your standard crispy, breaded onion rings, and then there’s your fluffy battered onion rings usually served at diners.  Both are yummy. But lately I’ve been all about the battered onion rings.  I hadn’t had any for a long time, and then we had some at a diner about a month ago and remembered how good they are.  Obviously we decided we needed to make our own at home, since we generally decide we need to figure out how to make everything ourselves at home.  And thus, this recipe was born.

The Snack Report: Red Velvet Oreos

While it may seem really fancy, red velvet cake is essentially a chocolate cake made red using either natural or artificial red coloring, and has a cream cheese frosting.  Though red velvet cake has been around since the early 20th century, it really seems to have exploded in popularity in the last few years.  Now there’s red velvet everything everywhere.  It seems like everything that can be made red velvet, is.  It’s even spinning off into blue velvet and green velvet cake mixes.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, a day of love and things colored red, Oreo decided to jump on the red velvet bandwagon by releasing limited edition Red Velvet Oreos.  They feature a red chocolate cookie with cream cheese flavored crème filling.  So, how did they do?

The Snack Report: Lance Sprinkled Sugar Sweet Creme Cookie Sandwiches

I saw these cookie sandwiches in the grocery store the other day, and figured since they were seasonal and limited edition they would be a good holiday-time snack report.  While I haven’t reviewed them on the blog, I have eaten Lance sandwich crackers in the past and enjoyed them, so I figured these would be pretty good too.

Since I feel like Lance might not be a super well-known brand I decided to do some research on them.  The company has actually been around since the early 1900s, though it wasn’t until the 1960s and beyond that they started reaching a wider audience.  They now have a wide range of snacks, but most are based upon the sandwich format.  Some are savory cracker sandwiches and others, like the ones being reviewed today are sweet cookie sandwiches.  So how did these sweet creme cookie sandwiches fare?
