Deep Dish, Twisted Food History! – Episode 8: S’mores!
In this episode of Deep Dish, we hang out around the campfire and roast up some s’mores! How long have we been roasting marshmallows around fires? Did the person who wrote down the s’mores recipe have the best Girl Scout leader name? You’ll have to listen to find out!
Highlights
- A brief trip down memory lane of school cafeterias/school lunches.
- The history of s’mores basically stops at the invention of s’mores because they’re so perfect! What else is there to talk about?
- Marshmallows used to be medicine!? Well… sort of!
- An insane deep-dive on one of the biggest fad-diet purveyors of all time, Sylvester Graham!
- We finally praise England for one of their contributions to the culinary world!
- A somewhat more recent edition of Shitty Old Recipes that tragically combines s’mores with hamburgers… (It’s as terrible as it sounds.)

Next week we focus on a true dessert sandwich, after questioning if s’mores count as a sandwich. This tasty frozen treat was born in New York at the turn of the 20th century, before coming a fixture in freezers around the globe. Think you know what it is? Guess in the comments here, on Facebook, Youtube, or Instagram, and we’ll feature you on a future episode of Deep Dish! Until then, stay hungry
Deep Dish, Twisted Food History! – Episode 7: Lemonade!
Deep Dish is back! After our brief hiatus to collect feedback, we’ve returned with our best episode yet. This week, we discuss the surprisingly ancient history of lemonade! Where did lemons come from? What’s an ade? Your answers await!
Highlights
- Lemons actually originate from a cool, old lineage of citrus fruits that sound like something from a shonen anime!
- Erik and Meg are in an incredibly anti-government mood thanks to an unfortunate letter from the IRS. Where’s Ron Paul when you need him?
- On that note, Erik and Meg officially decide they hate the federal government more than annoying children.
- If you have a foot fetish, then boy are you going to like the origins of pink lemonade!
- Another edition of Review Roast takes place, defending Brickhouse Brewery & Restaurant of Patchogue, from review trolls… some of which sound like they were written by an 18th century playwright, bizarrely.

Next week we’ll be focusing on one of the truest summertime treats that exist, though strangely only in America! These toasty, campfire favorites are simple, yet satisfying. Think you know what it is? Write in or comment with your guesses, and if you’re correct, we’ll give you a great bit shout-out in a future episode!
Until then, stay hungry!
PCFG Deep Dish Podcast – Episode 6: Off-Topic!
Following our trial run of five episodes, we’ve decided to do a bonus episode while we work on taking your feedback and suggestions for the future of Deep Dish! This episode is a bonus, so there’s no topic, no research, just laughs and food talk!
Highlights
- Camping food is awesome! We share some tips for campfire cookouts and what to make!
- PCFG Erik and Meg visit the new Lidl grocery store that opened recently! As the Germans tend to be, their grocery stores are efficient and clean.
- Speaking of Germany, Shitty Old Recipes returns with a recipe that combines chocolate cake with… fermented cabbage. Brilliant.

PCFG Deep Dish Podcast – Episode 5: Flan!
In this episode of Deep Dish, we take you all the way back to Ancient Rome where everybody’s favorite jiggly custard dessert, flan, was first created! Go on a mystical flan journey that spans several millenia, multiple civilizations collapsing, and all leading up to Japan creating versions of the dish that are larger than your face!
Highlights
- Flan has a lot of different names! And as usual, Britain gets it wrong.
- Boobs. Loooots and lots of boob references in an episode about one of the bounciest desserts in the world.
- The original recipes for flan kinda suck. They contained olive oil. And that wasn’t even the worst ingredient.
- Flan is a surprisingly international food! There’s SO many variations of it out there, and so many ways to serve and eat it.
- A very special edition of Shitty Old Recipes takes place, where, in the spirit of jiggly jiggly flan, we look through some old Jell-o mold abominations from the 1960s. They’re uh, they’re pretty bad.

PCFG Deep Dish Podcast – Episode 4: Banana Bread!
In this episode of Deep Dish, we discuss the incredibly specific circumstances that led to banana bread’s creation in the early 1900s! This sweet, quickbread seems so simple, but there’s more to it than just someone thinking banana-flavored bread was be a good idea!
Highlights
- New York is STILL hot as hell. But PCFG Erik and PCFG Meg power through for the good of food!
- Bananas actually have something in common with… plutonium?
- If you liked our history lesson on the Irish Potato Famine, then you’ll love our coverage of the Great Depression. (As much as one can “love” hearing about one of the most horrific times in American history…)
- People use banana bread as a means to bake “healthy” desserts, but let’s be real, desserts aren’t supposed to be healthy. They’re dessert.
- We debut our first edition of Review Roast! In this episode, we defend our favorite burrito joint from troll reviews that range from “You sound like a entitled douchebag” to “You don’t understand how food works.”

Next week we’ll be serving up the fifth and final episode of this initial trial-run of Deep Dish. Our last topic is an interesting one, featuring a dessert which was invented by the Holy Roman Empire, lasted through millenia and multiple civilizations collapsing, only to land itself in Japan, where a Pokemon was named after it.
Think you know what it might be? Submit your guesses on Facebook, Instagram, or in the comments below, and if you’re correct we’ll give you a shoutout on next week’s show! Until then, stay hungry, peeps!
This show is in early stages of creation so for now we’re doing a preliminary trial run of 5 episodes. If you like them, let us know on social media and we’ll keep making them!
