Food 101: How To Make A Glass of Lemonade

Summertime is the best, ya know? Unless you’re old and whine about the heat, there’s nothing to dislike about Summer. Beautiful weather, cool outdoors activities, great food and drinks, it’s a right-proper time of year. One of the most cherished, belovedly stereotypical drinks you might be thinking of, now that you’ve got this all on your mind, is good ol’ lemonade. Lemonade is the perfect balance between sour, sweet, cool, and refreshing. It’s simple to make, good for you, and it’s fun to joke around with your friends that it looks like you’re drinking pee.

Smoothie Sunday: Papaya Smoothie

Last year I experimented with vegetables in my smoothies more (and I still probably will a bit this year as well).  This year I’ve decided to experiment with new, slightly more exotic fruits.  First up is papaya.  I’d never actually had papaya before this, so I wasn’t even really sure what it tasted like, but I figured since it’s a tropical fruit it’d be yummy.  Papayas aren’t really that hard to find, you can usually find them in the produce department of most grocery stores (at least in my neck of the woods) there just isn’t always a huge selection of them.  Unfortunately, not knowing much about papayas I don’t think I let mine ripen enough before use.  If you’re going to try out this recipe, make sure the skin on your papaya is more yellow than green.  While yummy, I will note that this smoothie may not be for everyone, because the papaya takes on a bit of a gelatinous texture when blended that some people may find unpleasant.  I didn’t mind it though.  You may also be able to negate this a bit by adding more liquid.

Quick Recipe: Carrot Cucumber Slaw

Burger season is here!  I realize some people eat burgers year-round, but no one can deny that summer is the true burger season.  And whether you enjoy hamburgers, turkey/chicken burgers, or veggie burgers, one of the best parts is customizing your burger for optimal deliciousness.  That’s where this slaw comes in.  Originally thrown together to dress up some sandwiches we made for dinner, this slaw is really great for summer barbeques.  It can be served as a side dish like cole slaw (though infinitely better, because really, who actually likes cole slaw?) or used as a condiment for your burgers or grilled chicken sandwiches (or also probably hot dogs!  Though that one hasn’t been tested).  It adds a nice fresh flavor to your sandwich, and helps you get your daily serving of veggies.  A win-win!

The Snack Report: Watermelon Pop-Tarts

For as long as I can remember there’s always been this intense rivalry over Pop-Tarts VS Toaster Strudels. Pop-Tarts was the more “fun” toaster pastry, coming up with insane flavor varieties, like PB&J or hot-fudge sundae, that almost come close to Pizza Lab territory. Toaster Strudels meanwhile were the wholesome choice, containing actual fruit and being more of an actual breakfast food instead of a sugary-treat disguised as breakfast. Personally I never picked a side; I enjoyed both of them, though as a kid growing up, my mother never really bought Toaster Strudels for whatever reason. So you bet your ass that as an adult I buy them whenever I want! And while I still don’t hold any malice towards Pop-Tarts, I don’t eat them as often as I used to, usually only checking out new or limited edition flavors.

Smoothie Sunday: Strawberry Peach Mango Smoothie

Summer is here!  Which means that Smoothie Sunday is back!  I have to admit, I’m feeling a bit intimidated about coming up with 3 months’ worth of smoothies for a third year in a row.  But I shall do my best to bring you new smoothie ideas every Sunday.  I also admit that Smoothie Sunday season snuck up on me a bit this year and I wasn’t totally prepared, meaning I was a bit lacking in supplies when it came time to start making smoothies.  But we here at Poor Couple’s Food Guide are nothing if not thrifty and up for improvising.  So first smoothie up this season wasn’t as carefully planned out as last year’s…this one was inspired solely by what fruit was around the house.  Originally it was going to just be a peach mango smoothie, but I had some strawberries left from strawberry picking that had to be used before going bad, so in they went!  I also forgot to buy yogurt, so I didn’t include yogurt in the smoothie I made, but I’m including it in the recipe because there wasn’t enough smoothie without it.
