Smoothie Sunday: Mixed Starfruit Smoothie
I’m not sure how common starfruits are. When I was younger I used to get them from the grocery store often, but then I went a long time without seeing them. When I finally saw starfruit again at the store the other day I bought couple. I knew I wanted to try making a smoothie with one because they have a very light, refreshing taste. To boost up the amount of fruit I added some blueberries we’re still trying to finish and some pineapple we had lying around. I ended up with a very summery, refreshing smoothie that’s high in vitamin C and antioxidants. Can’t beat that.

For The Love of God, Eat Your Scraps: How To Master the Art of Leftovers and Waste Less Food
So you might remember a pretty alarming study from 2012 back about how Americans throw out something close to half their leftovers per year. Well it’s 2017 and there’ve been a couple more recent ones since then and, well, things aren’t really getting better. As of 2014, America threw out close to 40 million tons of food waste, which was more than double the number in 1980. In 2015, we threw out $165 billion worth of leftovers, and over 20% of all waste in the U.S. is made of food, even more than plastics, papers, and metals.
What the frig?!
No matter how you want to try and spin those numbers, that’s an absolute embarrassment for us a country. And let me say this right at the outset, we at PCFG promise to never get political with our content, and as such this post is not politically-charged. But! Regardless of how you feel about environmentalism or the culture surrounding it, I think preeeetty much everyone here can describe themselves as “pro-food”.
If we all like food, and we all eat food, then why the hell are we throwing so much of it away?! There’s a few explanations, some of which might be a little bit more uncomfortable to hear about (and we’ll discuss in a future post), but let’s focus on the solution here: stop throwing your frigging leftovers away. It’s bonus food. Who doesn’t want BONUS food? At the very least, if you’re not worried about working on reducing the amount of waste we as humans create, you have to at least want to up your leftovers game if no better reason than to just have more food.
Sorry For The Lack of Posts! Erik and Meg Are Moving!
Many of you are probably wondering what happened to PCFG, since we’ve slowed down on our post production lately. Our usual schedule of 1-3 posts per week has gradually calmed down to the halt it’s at right now, but not without reason!
Both Meg and myself are in the midst of moving to a new apartment! And in true Poor Couple fashion, our new digs will be at the affordable Art Space artist lofts in Patchogue, NY.
While for the time being we’ve been slacking on our posts, we still plan on keeping our promise of delivering a new Pizza Lab to you every month. So while you may only see a couple sporadic posts here and there, Pizza Labs will continue to enrich your life on its usual monthly basis.
We apologize to all our fans whom may be looking forward to our other articles, but fret not; we plan on returning to our regular posting schedule starting in January! Starting then, you can look forward to more Cheat Codes, Food 101s, even more Pizza Labs, newer content in our Musings section, and possibly even the return of Midnight Snack as well as a couple new videos! Thanks again for following PCFG, and until the next time, keep on cookin’!
Smoothie Sunday: Guavacado Smoothie
Full disclosure – this is not the most attractive looking smoothie I’ve ever made. In fact it’s probably one of the least attractive ones. Like, I was actively disappointed in how not good it looked. But fortunately looks aren’t everything. Taste is important too, and luckily it tastes good. While I’d had guava juice in stuff before, I’d never actually eaten just guava fruit before, but I found them when I was at the store picking up an avocado and thus this smoothie was born. The fact that the words “guava” and “avocado” blend together so well is merely coincidence.

Smoothie Sunday: Prickly Pear Kiwi Smoothie
So, my original intention for this smoothie was to be kiwi and star fruit, but my usual grocery store didn’t have any star fruit. I scoured another local grocery store for star fruit and came up empty, but I needed some other fruit to go with the kiwis. Then I spotted the prickly pears. I’d eaten prickly pears once before a long time ago and had vague memories of liking them, so I decided to give it a try. Prickly pears are the fruit of a cactus. Out in nature they have spikes on them like the rest of the cactus. But when you buy them in stores the spikes have been removed so there’s no danger of stabbing. They do however still have a bunch of annoying seeds inside. Experimenting with new fruits is always a little tricky, but the kiwi and prickly pear flavors went well together so it was worth it in the end.
