Smoothie Sunday: Peanut Butter Protein Shake

Full disclosure: any smoothie recipe posted that features bananas is one of Erik’s creations.  I don’t like the flavor of bananas.  The only banana thing I like is my mom’s banana bread because it doesn’t taste all that much like bananas.  Anyway, back when Erik fought in martial arts shows, he devised his very own protein shake!  All in all, it will net you between 40-50g of protein, and on top of that has lots of other great nutrients for you to enjoy in your sweaty, post-workout clothes!  Besides that, this peanut butter shake can be made ‘just cuz’ if you’re in the mood for a nice yummy, peanut buttery treat, simply omit the raw eggs and wheat germ for something more dessert-like.

What you’ll need

Peanut Butter Protein Shake

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup peanut butter (1/2 cup will do if you’re low)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 3 raw eggs*
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 banana (optional)
  • 3 tbsp wheat germ
  • 1/4 cup vanilla yogurt or ice cream (optional)

Microwave your peanut butter for about 20-30 seconds, until it’s nice and smooth.  Add the milk, peanut butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla and blend until mixed well.  Peel your banana, and add it and the wheat germ to the shake, and blend one more time, until your shake is smooth.  If necessary, add additional sugar if shake is not sweet enough.  Pour into a large glass, and enjoy!

*We’re fortunate to have access to hand raised chicken eggs (as in they live in Erik’s parents’ backyard) so we generally don’t have to worry about salmonella.  If you do not and are worried about the risk, you can use pasteurized egg products they sell in stores.  Just used about 2 eggs’ worth.  Or just omit them entirely.
